Virtual Box

I’ve had hit-or-miss experiences with virtual OS’s on my home machine.  When I had an Apple powerbook, Parallels was awesome.  It just simply worked with no hassles.

On the Linux platform I have not been impressed with any of the virtualization packages until just a few days ago.  A colleague showed my Oracle’s Virtual Box software.   Just like Parallels, it just works on Linux.  No hassle, no fuss, no issues.

So far on my Fedora 17 desktop I have Windows 7 and CentOS 6.5 running.  By this evening Fedora 20 will be running as well.

Jill’s Bedroom

We recently repainted Jill’s bedroom.  What made this interesting is we used magnetic paint on some of the walls.

magnetic_paintAfter reading reviews I decided to put 4 coats of the magnetic paint on the walls to ensure magnets would stick to the walls.  All the write-ups indicated the more coats of paint, the better magnets would stick to the wall.  People who used only 1 or 2 coats were not happy with the results.  Those who used 4 to 5 coats all said the results were satisfactory.

We then covered over the magnetic paint with the top coat color.

The overall effect is pretty cool.  Ordinary kitchen magnets stick with enough force to hold a couple of sheets of paper.

Nice Work if you can get it

Cathy and I tend to celebrate the day we met more than our actual anniversary.  So this past weekend we went into the city to catch a Broadway play and a nice dinner.

We went to see the musical “Nice Work if you can get it” with niceworkifyoucangetitMatthew Broderick.  Unfortunately the understudy was performing in place of him.  Still, the play was excellent.  The two thugs were hilarious.  A couple of the songs, such as “Blah, blah, blah” were just out right funny.  Blythe Donner also had a small part towards the end.  I was disappointed in her performance.  Her part was very small and didn’t add to the story.  It felt like her part was an add-on to help ticket sales.  Setting her character aside, this musical was very enjoyable and worth seeing.

For diner we went to “The View” restaurant on top of the Marriott Marquis in Times Square.  The meal was nice, the view was very good.  Having diner alone with my wife, with out interruption from the kids was priceless.

22 Years Ago today…

Beware the Ides of March.

22 years ago today on March 15th 1991,  I met my future wife.  We met in an Irish pub next to McFadden’s on 42nd street and Second Ave in New York City.

That night I was out with Bill Beck, Paul Beck and John Whalen.  St Patrick’s day was occurring over the weekend, so all the Irish pubs were celebrating with the after-work crowd that Friday evening.

The place was jammed pack.  Somehow we managed to get a table.  The four of us were planning a trip to South Padre Island, TX.  We were using whatever excuse we could find to drink.  Around 10pm Paul had to excuse himself for the men’s room.  I know it was around 10pm because we found out just a short while later that the kitchen had closed.  But I’ll get to that part of the story in a second…

If you haven’t been to a pack pub in NYC, let me tell you, there is no extra space that is not either occupied by a table or filled with people standing.

As Paul tried to get out of his seat, he had to squeeze between me and the table behind me.  With the tight space and just a wee bit to much to drink, he ended up falling backwards over top the table behind me.  Just picture a 6′ 230lb guy with his arms flailing, landing flat out on his back on top of all the food.  Yes, there was a mess.  Yes, we had a HUGE scene with everyone watching.  Yes, he had to scrap food off his back.

The table was occupied by two very pretty women.

In typical fashion, Paul jumped up, and added drama to the whole event.  He bellowed for the waitress over to help cleanup the mess.  He demanded that he pay bill for all the food and drinks.  He demanded that all the food be replaced and new drinks be given.  That’s when we found out the kitchen had just closed for the night.  So he had to settle for paying their bill and picking up their drinks.

After the drama settled down and everything was cleaned up, Paul finished his initial task and made it to the men’s room.  Upon returning, instead of taking his original seat at the table with us, he choose instead to sit with the two women.  Yes, in those days we had no shame.

After a few minutes, I realized that one guy was sitting with two women.  So I picked up my chair and rotated it 180 degrees to sit with them.

As Paul was actively engaged talking to one of the women, Cathy, I began talking to the other, Barbara.  Hey that’s what a good wingman does!

After a few more drinks Paul pulls out a pack of cigarettes. Simultaneously Barbara exclaims “Oh can I have one” and Cathy exclaims “ew, you smoke!”.  Paul and I look at each other shrug our shoulders.  He hands a cigarette to Barbara and starts talking to her.  I start talking to Cathy.  I repeat, in those days we had no shame.

I don’t remember all the details of the night, things started to get fuzzy when we headed up to another party on the upper east side.  A friend of Bill’s had just moved into a penthouse apartment and was throwing a moving in party.  All I remember of the friend was everyone called him “Jake the Snake”.  All he had time to move in was a Foosball table, a couple of kegs and a stereo.

I do remember Cathy and Barbara calling car service sometime before the sun rose to take them home.  I don’t remember how I made it back to Hoboken.  I do remember the hangover on Saturday.

On Sunday we were recapping the events of Friday night over at Bill’s apartment.  Both Bill and Paul were encouraging me to call Cathy for a follow up date.  I honestly couldn’t remember what she looked like.  “Was she cute?” I asked Paul.  “Of course she was cute!” was his reply.  Of course what else would he have said?  So we devised this plan for me to call her and ask her out for a lunch date.  This way if she wasn’t cute, it would only cost me lunch and 30 minutes of time.  When Cathy showed up at the restaurant, it all clicked.

So when you out tonight celebrating the coming St Patrick’s day, just remember the Ides of March is upon us….

MJ’s Eagle Scout Project

MJ completed his Eagle Scout project this past weekend. His project was to rebuild 250 feet of fence at the Lincroft Little League field. The old fence had a single horizontal rail and a top rail made of 2×4. Kids were constantly climbing under or over the fence.  People would get splinters from the old wood.  Plus there were several 4×4 posts that needed to be replaced.
With the rebuild, MJ designed three horizontal rails plus a top rail made of Trex, as you can see in the photo.  The project took two days and involved 155 man hours of labor.  Scouts and friends did most of the labor.

A special thank you to David Seibel for sponsoring the project with the Lincroft Little League and working with MJ through the project.

Heading Home

Thursday, Sept 6th marks the day we began our journey back home. To get home we had to take 3 flights. The first leg was on a ATC-72 Turbo prop plane with Blinter Canaries to get to Gran Canarie Island. The turbo prop plane was a very modern, fully digital aircraft. The second leg would take us from Gran Canarie to Madrid and then the final leg to JFK on Iberia airlines. We had a 20 hour layover in Madrid. So I booked a hotel room and planned a day around the old portion of Madrid.

As we boarded the Turbo prop, the pilot heard that he had Americans on board. He quickly came out of the cockpit and found Jill & I. Turns out he was planning a trip to New York and wanted to pick my brain on what to do and what to see. In turn Jill got to sit in the pilot’s seat with the co-pilot taking her through all the controls. I was very impressed with Blinter Canaries airline. It is a small airline catering to the Canary Islands, but the planes are very new and the staff is very professional.

The flight to Gran Canarie and then to Madrid went without a hitch. When we got to Madrid, we had our first travel problem to deal with. Both mine and Cathy’s checked luggage didn’t make the transfer in Gran Canarie. We found ourselves in Madrid with our bags still in the Canaries. We almost made it through the trip with no major problems!

Of course I made everyone pack thier carry on luggage with the remaining clothes to get all the way home. The Iberia rep was able to quickly locate our bags, they were already tagged for the next flight in the morning to Madrid. I had the rep ship the bags to our house, so we wouldn’t lose the day trying to track them down. As it turned out our missing bags crossed the Atlantic on the flight before us. Both bags were waiting for us in the JFK terminal before clearing customs. The Iberia flights across the Atlantic was as comfortable as you can be for a 7 1/2 hour flight in economy. The planes were nicly kept and the flight attendants very good. I would fly Iberia again if the need ever arises.

Friday’s Activities in Lanzarote

Today, our first full day in Lanzarote, was a recovery day for us.  We all got some sleep and started to get used to being 5 hours ahead of NY. I’ve loaded a bunch of trip photos.

We started the day heading down to Puerto Del Carmen’s old harbour.  We strolled around the seaport and the side streets.  I am finding that Lanzarote is a very safe place.  The policia take security and safety very seriously. There is an old world charm to the old harbour area.  Small side streets that hide a lot of shops.  Lots of hills.  The entire town of Puerto Del Carmen sits on a hill side.  You definitely need to have a good pair of legs and a good pair of walking shoes to get around and really see everything that is to see!

We found the water sports center in Old Harbour, where they had jet skis, parasailing and banana boat rides.  We had a blast taking a banana boat ride across the harbour. The water sports center sits on a pier that is about 10 feet above the water.  The locals were jumping off the pier into crystal clear blue water.

After jumping off the pier we walked to the other side to swim at a small sandy beach with large pumice stones scattered around the beach and water.

As we walked around, MJ & I wandered into each dive shop that we found.  We decided to use Safari Diving.   There are a ton of beach dives in Lanzarote.  Because the islands are volcanic, the water gets deep very fast.  Within 200 feet of shore the water can be 100 to 150 feet deep.  Tomorrow morning MJ & I are going for a beach dive.  I’m taking the Go-Pro, so I should have some video to share.

The Trade Winds

Yesterday I was concerned that we were going to be sleeping in a sweat box without AC.  It turns out the trade winds are constantly blowing over the islands.  When the sun sets, the temperature drops like a rock.  Around 2 am Jill and Cathy actually needed blankets.

Talking to the staff today I found out that there is a two week period, usually around the end of July or beginning of August when they have a heat wave.  During that two week period the trade winds stop.  If we were here during that time, my worst fears would have been realized.

Fortunately, we avoided the heat wave and sleeping here without AC is very, very comfortable!

Arriving in Lanzarote

The flights last night were interesting. It was the first red eye flight for the kids and Cathy. This morning as we were landing in Madrid, MJ asked why it is called a red eye flight.  I told him to look in the mirror.

The flight to Madrid was 7 hours long.  We landed in Madrid at 6:55am Madrid time or 12:55am eastern time.  By the time Jill started to settle down and get tired, we were an hour out of Madrid.  So much for sleeping on the long flight over. We did get to see the sunrise over Madrid as we were landing.  That was a very beautiful sight.

Going through customs in Spain was the easiest, convenient, pleasurable border crossing experiences that I have ever had.  We were literally through customs in under 10 minutes from the time we left the plane.

We made our connection in Madrid for Lanzarote with time to spare.  We were all spent when we boarded the Lanzarote flight.  The fly time was 2 hours and 10 minutes.  I think everyone got a full 2 hours of sleep.

Our villa has semi-private balcony overseeing the bay of Puerto Del Carmen. We have 4 pools to choose from.  The villa doesn’t have AC, however everyone reassures us that it isn’t needed.  The breeze is constant through the night and there is no humidity.

The views and scenery are spectacular.  The Canaries are volcanic, so the mountains are jagged, the beaches have long stretches of sand with occasionally lava rocks interrupting the flow.

Tonight we’re creating our game plan for the week.  I wasn’t going to rent a car, but the traffic is very easy to navigate and to see the island on our time-line, I’m really giving it thought.  MJ & I have already scoped out a dive shop.  There are some underwater lava tubes nearby that sounds awesome to explore.

Already this trip is going to be different…

We arrived at JFK at 3pm with plenty of time for our 5:55pm flight. Normally for family vacations Cathy & I split duties.  She handles getting the kids through the airport and onto the plane.  I handle the luggage,

On past vacations, depending on the age of the kids, we would have somewhere between 8 and 11 bags.  This trip has started with a really nice surprise.  The kids can handle their own luggage and they can deal with the airport security lines with just some guidance from Cathy & I.

I didn’t have to struggle with 300 lbs of luggage.  Wow.  What a treat.
